Alcatel Idol X+ battery test

The Alcatel Idol X+ runs on a robust MT6592 octa-core processor, and is the first “true” octa-core smartphone we’ve reviewing toting a chip capable of throttling any number of the eight cores depending on how much power is required.

Alcatel has also thrown in a robust 2,500mAh battery into the mix, which leaves us curious to see how well the CPU is doing in terms of efficiency. Let’s dive in!

The Idol X+ is a refresh of last years’ Idol X flagship, and houses the same 5-inch 1080p display, 2GB of RAM, and 13MP/2MP camera combo. We mentioned the upgrade in battery and, of course, the addition of the 2.0GHz octa-core processor, but what’s more impressive is that Alcatel was able to achieve all this by adding just 1mm to the thickness and retaining the exact same weight of 130 grams.

But enough about the internals, it’s numbers we’re after. One last thing worth mentioning is the dual-SIM support, which means support for an another carrier while adding slightly to battery drain on standby.

When it comes to 3G talk time, the Idol X+ punched above its weight, lasting for 14 hours and 41 minutes – nearly three hours longer than what its manufacturer suggests. We ran the test with two active SIM cards in play (although one of them effectively turns off if you’re talking on the other).

Things come back down to Earth, however, when it comes web browsing. A time of just under 6 hours is rather poor and puts it alongside some pretty old smartphones in this test.

Videos watching endurance was also disappointing. Even though the crisp display on the Idol X+ makes for great experience, you will only be being able to watch movies for just over 6 hours before the battery hits 10% (at which point most droids refuse to continue playback).

When it comes to the final word on battery endurance, the verdict is simple: if you plan on doing a lot of calling, the Alcatel Idol X+ is the phone for you. It provides great talk time and it garnishes it with very respectable standby endurance.

When it comes to web browsing and watching videos, however, things aren’t as great. Alcatel is apparently able to optimize things very well with the display turned off, but once the great-looking screen turns on things aren’t as great. Still, the 6 hour range is far from the worst we’ve seen in both of those categories, and the Idol X+ is able to achieve a rating of 45 hours in our endurance test. That means you’ll be able to last for 45 hours between charges if you perform 1 hour each of calling, surfing, and watching videos per day.
